Pizza Fusion was born in February of 2006 out of the (not so) genius minds of Michael Gordon and Vaughan Lazar. Weeks prior to Lazar getting married, the two college mates began brainstorming how they could do something different that would not only spark their creative juices, but start a business that would make a difference in people’s lives. After a few meetings and several ‘not so genius ideas’ later, Pizza Fusion was born. They realized that there was a huge void in the restaurant sector that prevented people from eating out organically. Sure, it was simple to go to the nearest Whole Foods or Wild Oats, but where could you go to eat this type of food on the run or, better yet, have it delivered to your door.
Even though Gordon and Lazar felt that by providing the public with organic pizzas, salads, sandwiches, wines and beer was an awesome idea… it still wasn’t complete. What good would they be doing this fragile Earth if they had followed the same practice of allowing their food delivered in a broken down car? They took their concept into a whole new world… they decided that they would buy their own delivery cars, and not just any cars… hybrids! All of Pizza Fusion’s delicious food is delivered in company-owned, hybrid delivery vessels that get excellent gas mileage and have low harmful carbon emissions.
So fresh, delicious, organic food delivered in only hybrid delivery vessels sounds like all the bases were covered… not for Gordon and Lazar. They made it their mission to care about the quality of their food and their impact on the environment, but realized that one last piece was missing… the quality of their work environment. Michael and Vaughan wanted the culture and dynamic of the Fusion Family to be treated as carefully as the food and the environment. They opted to offer all employees working more than 20 hours a week health insurance. They realized that maintaining a healthy workplace not only made sense, it was the key to their business. Great employees serving delicious food would prove to be the makings of success.
The founders of Pizza Fusion were committed to the integrity of their entire concept. They agreed early on that if it doesn’t feel right, then don’t do it. They lived by the mantra that ‘All Things Happen for a Reason’. That mantra was reinforced in August of 2006 when Randy Romano walked into the first Pizza Fusion store in Deerfield Beach to see what all the buzz was about. The second he walked into the store and tried the pizza, he wondered why this idea wasn’t in every town across the globe. You see, Randy’s background is in franchising awesome ideas like Pizza Fusion. He went home and pulled up this very website to see if it was a franchise and the second he saw that it was just the lil ole Deerfield store only, his entrepreneurial fire started burning. Ironically, what Romano didn’t know was that his soon-to-be son-in-law was Vaughan’s childhood friend. A call was made, a meeting was had… the rest is history! Now Romano, Gordon and Lazar are determined to bring their recipes of delicious, organic food to your door.

The History,
At the age of fourteen I went to work with my dad and little did I know over 35 years later I would still be making the best Pizzas!
I started at our Families pizzeria in Whittier called Pizzamania, and to this day its still family owned and cranking out the pizzas. I went on from their to manage a few other pizza places all through High school and finally decided to open my first store in 1978 in Anaheim, at the age of nineteen; Michael’s pizza was born, using my fathers recipe and the concept of "JUST MAKE GOOD PIZZA". Shortly after the success of the first store I opened my second store in Garden Grove.
As I grew in stores I also grew a family and decided it was time to move from Orange County and Opened the Wildomar Michael’s Pizza in 1992. The Valley was growing and I opened Michael’s Pizza II in Temecula in 1999. Nothing has really changed except computers and cell phones, but we are still dedicated to making the best quality pizza & providing good service.
For 35 years I’ve seen God’s hand in the whole journey & I’m looking forward to see where he’s going to take Michael’s pizza next.

The Submarina Story

When Submarina founders Les Warfield and Ron Vickers moved to San Diego in 1976, one of the first things they did was try to find a sub-sandwich shop. The sunny days in San Diego were enough to lure the two U.S. Postal Service workers from Reno, Nevada, however it wasn’t long before they missed one of their favorite work-day lunch stops. As their sandwich search continued in San Diego without success, they started talking about opening their own shop. How hard could it be?
As Warfield said, "We had no experience, no capital and by every rule of business we should have failed. We didn’t know an avocado from prosciutto, but we were willing to learn."
"The secret of our success is a quality product."
Their first lesson was in how to design a building. "We walked around on the site before the construction started and tried to imagine counters and tables – figuring out where to put things," said Warfield.
"Of course, we have since learned, the neighboring city of Poway, is a very difficult place to start a new business. What saved us was a good product and the established reputation for great food and service," said Warfield.
Vickers agreed. "You can put a McDonald’s anywhere. The secret of our success is a quality product."
The first shop opened in 1977 and a second followed, in Escondido (California), in 1979.
The stores were operated, for several years, by wives Maureen Vickers and Lynn Warfield, with Ron and Les contributing after hours, when available. Like any family-operated business, there were sacrifices of time, vacations, weekends and evenings, all devoted to Submarina. It wasn’t until the mid-1980’s that the mail carriers were able to hang up their mail bags and get behind the counter full-time.
Submarina secured its place by producing hearty sandwiches made from quality ingredients. Today the generous helpings of meat and cheese are still sliced in front of the customer, ensuring freshness. All breads are still made from scratch by a baker and delivered to the stores fresh.
